The Academic Bookstore is a cornerstone of Finnish book culture, founded in 1893 with its first branch on Aleksanterinkatu. Since 1930 it has belonged to Stockmann, and today the great Helsinki store stands directly beside the department store, its presence both historic and central.
Stepping inside, the space opens wide and bright, with rows of books stretching out in quiet order. The gallery-like first floor looks down across the shop, offering a perspective that feels almost cathedral-like. Here, a café invites you to pause, to linger over coffee with your newly chosen book.
There is something unmistakably Alvar Aalto in the design: clean white surfaces, clarity, and light. It feels part library, part modernist dream, functional, yet deeply human in scale. At the same time, there’s a whisper of the department store in its grandeur, a reminder of Stockmann’s presence just next door.
For me, a visit to this bookstore is more than just shopping, it’s an experience. Anyone coming to Helsinki should make time for it.

It’s never easy when two major bookshops stand so close together. Yet Akateeminen Kirjakauppa and this branch of Suomalainen Kirjakauppa feel worlds apart, especially in their selection and design.
Suomalainen Kirjakauppa struck me as leaning more towards mainstream and younger titles. The staff recommendations, while neatly presented, rarely ventured beyond the familiar. Among the English-language books, there was an overwhelming emphasis on contemporary romance, far more than I cared for.
The lower floor is given over mostly to stationery, practical but hardly inspiring. Still, what sets the shop apart is its bright, uncluttered Nordic design. There is a freshness to the space that makes browsing a pleasure, even if I often paused at shelves without finding much to tempt me.
For me, the true highlight was upstairs: the cosy café where I could sit in the calm after wandering the aisles.
